Long Haired Miniature Dachshund

A Long Haired Miniature Dachshund is a very popular variety of the Dachshund. These dogs are very affectionate, friendly, and make good pets for people of various walks of life. Like all other Dachshunds, these creatures are intelligent, proud, bold, curious, and courageous. Such features make these dogs a challenge to own for novice owners, but experienced and patient owners soon find an approach to their dogs and form close bonds with them.

A Long Haired Miniature Dachshund was not developed for following the quarry to earth, like the Smooth variety of the breed, so these dogs are reported to be calmer than the Smooth Dachshund. A long dense coat was a good protection from the rough terrain, but for hunting, long-haired dogs had to be trimmed to prevent the hair from getting entangled. A smaller variety of the breed was once used to hunt hare and stoat.

Though there was no need for the Long Haired Miniature Dachshund to follow the prey into underground dens, this breed variety retains the basic features of the breed: an elongated body with a deep chest and short legs. In spite of a small size, these dogs carry themselves proudly and are able to stand their ground. The head of the Dachshund is elongated, with a refined convex profile, arched eyebrows, and robust jaws. The eyes of the Dachshund are oval and dark in color. The ears are soft and hanging on the cheeks. Many coat colors and patterns are accepted in this breed.

The Dachshund comes in three coat varieties: smooth-coated, long-coated, and wire-haired. Long-coated and wire-haired Dachshunds are often mistaken for other breeds, as they are rare. As for the size of the Dachshund, there are three size varieties: standard (14 to 18 inches at the withers and over 11 pounds in weight), miniature (up to 14 inches and up to 11 pounds), and toy (under 12 inches and under 8 pounds). Toy Dachshunds are not accepted by the AKC, but can be registered by some European registries. A Long Haired Miniature Dachshund can be registered by any registry or kennel club, if it corresponds to the breed standard.
