Dachshunds - Pictures - Training

Dachshunds rank high among the smartest dog breeds. They can easily learn a number of commands. Dachshunds tend to be manipulative at times. Treats are very productive at earlier stages of training. However, try substituting treats with praise at a later stage. Using fewer and fewer treats is recommended to teach the Dachshund to respond to praise in time.

Smooth Dachshunds require minimum maintenance. A regular rubdown with a damp cloth can be enough to keep the pet smooth, clean, and shiny. Its short coat gives little trouble even to those owners who suffer from allergies. Dachshunds are average shedders.

There are no extra recommendations concerning coat care in all types of Dachshunds besides brushing and occasional bathing. However, the wirehaired Dachshund is likely to need professional trimming. It may be harmful to bathe the Dachshund very often, as you can wash away the body oils, which can lead to itchy skin. Use special shampoos for canines when bathing.

What is essential though is regular examinations of your Dachshund's eyes and ears to make sure the dog has not caught any infection through ticks or dirt. As hound dogs and dogs that are used for hunting nowadays, Dachshunds do not need to be groomed in a special way. Dachshunds are said to be the dogs whose form utterly serves its initial purpose.
