Dachshunds can be bought from reputable breeders, pet shops, backyard breeders, puppy mills, etc. Some say that puppies are puppies, no matter where you get them. You can never be sure that the puppy you are inclined to bring home is a future champion or at least has not inherited any genetic diseases.
Pet stores claim that they sell only healthy purebred puppies. However, it is a fact that responsible breeders choose other ways to sell their litters. They do not cooperate with pet stores. Finding a responsible owner for a high quality puppy is a part of their breeding program and one of the main paragraphs in the responsible breeder's code of rules. Pet stores do not keep track of the puppies sold.
Though registration papers may be a matter of no importance in many cases, the pet store puppies are usually registered with the AKC. However, to make sure that the Dachshund pup is healthy you need to see its pedigree and results of all necessary medical tests in the parents. The purebred Dachshund puppy from champion parents can be obtained only from reputable breeders, whose long- term aim is to improve the breed's conformation and temperament.

Mating related dogs is called line breeding. Invariability of the offspring is acquired. When buying a Dachshund puppy from a breeder, ask him about the method and program he used in breeding his Dachshunds.
