Dachshunds - Pictures - Breed Description
Dachshunds are included in the hound dogs group and are highly praised as hunting dogs. This dog breed is famous all over the world for its outstanding capacity to independently perform its job in badger burrows and for its affectionate nature.
Hallmarks of the Dachshund breed are the unique elongated body, short legs, elegant muscular neck and moderately long rounded ears. Black eyes have a very intelligent expression. The Dachshund is extremely smart and is known to be apt to learn fast.
Dachshunds are small dogs. However, they are unlikely to let a person or a dog doubt its importance in a canine world.
Life Span: Some Dachshunds are known to have lived well into their late teens. The Dachshund's life expectancy is 12-15 years on average.

Dachshunds attract the dog lovers' attention by the variety of types they come in. Standard and miniature Dachshunds can have smooth, longhaired or wirehaired coat. Besides the difference in the coat texture some temperamental differences in these types are often mentioned. Wirehaired Dachshunds are believed to be the most active and lively. Longhaired Dachshunds tend to be anxious and sometimes reserved with strangers and uneasy in new surroundings. The smooth-haired types show agility and a friendly attitude. Dachshunds run a risk of getting back problems, if their owners are not careful about this health hazard. A ruptured disc in the spinal cord cannot only cause pain when the dog is moving, but also can have far more dangerous consequences. Paralysis is much more difficult to treat. Due to the specific form of the body, Dachshunds are prone to disc problems.
Dachshunds should be regularly vetted and checked for eye, ear infections, low thyroid and urinary stones.
